Aidan was playing in the backyard, fell off the stool he was on, and then hit his lip on the leg of the stool that tipped over. The result was a nice little gash on the upper lip. After urgent care told us the emergency room was needed we headed over to our trusted Univ. of Ca. Davis hospital.
We decided to try numbing the site and doing a dose of intranasal versed instead of waiting the three additional hours for full sedation. I did warn the doctor of my small, stubborn and mighty little man. But, we agreed to try it out.
Trying to keep the numbing agent patch in place on a 3 year old is pretty hard, let alone on the mouth area. By chance I said something about the reward of the Wii for being good and the nurse came back with this.
Only my son would manage to talk the nurse into giving him the Wii. After giving him the versed they warned me he would get loopy. Didn't happen. He was still able to bowl a 163 while on the stuff. He did lean back a ways after each throw but other than that, no big change.
I was so impressed with my little man. He was the most calm I'd ever seen him in the ER. He only squealed when they kept sticking him with that needle (of Novacain?). While they stitched him up he and I practiced counting his numbers and he was such a good boy! The doctors were very impressed.
Here's the little guy today showing off his stitch. If you ask him what happened yesterday, he'll tell you he played the Wii at the doctor's office. Obviously, he wasn't traumatized by the experience.
