This week Aidan seemed to be fighting off another little cold and by Thursday evening he was REALLY congested and coughing somewhat regularly. After his evening nap I picked him up, got a bottle ready for him to drink, talked to Kevin on the phone and then when I was holding him his nose got really stuffy and it was hard for him to breathe. Well, as he struggled to take full breaths he began to go limp and loosey goosey. The best way to describe it, he faded away from me. I tried calling to him to get him to breathe through his mouth and snap out of it but he wouldn't. I tried the nasal aspirator (but no saline drops because we had ran out) but no luck. I then ran into the bathroom and put cold water on his face and tried to get a few drops in his nose (to loosen things) and then ran back to the bedroom with the aspirator again. All the while screaming at the kid to wake up. Scared isn't even strong enough a word to describe how I was dealing with the fact that I might have to call 911 and that my baby might...but Thank God he woke up and began crying. The color returned to his face as he cried so I let him cry. Get that oxygen to the brain. I threw a bunch of stuff in a bag (baby stuff, breast pump, etc.) and drove him over to the UC Davis Med Center emergency room.
After sitting there for three hours we saw the ER doctors. Five hours later we were then admitted to pediatrics and kept overnight for tests and observation. All tests came back clear (RSV and other viral infections, urinary tract infection, chest Xray, EKG, blood tests) so we have figured the episode was due to the huge amount of congestion the kiddo had. While we were in Ped's we were introduced to the coolest tool ever, the nasal vacuum. The stuff it pulled out of his nose...wow. Wish I had one at home. Since it was more of a deep sticky congestion the basic aspirator couldn't get much but this vacuum was awesome and was used MANY times.
He is doing better today in the congestion and was discharged from the hospital this afternoon. We're back at home resting with the grandma's and hoping the little man's cold goes away soon.
